Hi all, been very well for a long time now but last night started with immense intermittent hip pain which has settled into constant throb on the inside of my hip joint and walking is really painful due to weight bearing. I don't know if this is a "flare" as i have been great for a good 12months or so with only slight twinges but nothing like this. I have had steroid injections at the initial consultation, but that was ages ago. Do they wear off? not sure what to do for the best, any advice would be very welcome please, dawnybee Sad

Hi Dawn

Sorry to hear you are struggling with hip pain. Steroid injections do tend to have a limited lifespan although, from my own experience, this seems to vary considerably. A 'flare' generally involves several joints as it is the sudden onset of inflammation caused by over-activity of the immune system. Individual joints can be affected particularly when they have perhaps seen a period of over use.

I wonder whether it is actually the hip joint itself or rather inflammation of the bursa (bursitis) which lies over the joint. This can cause intense pain and does indeed feel as though it is the joint itself causing the problem. I have had a few periods of bursitis in my right hip and on the last occasion received a steroid injection via ultrasound directly into the bursa. This ensures the right area is treated, often difficult to acheive when a large area is involved. For me that did the trick and it must be 3/4 years ago now and I've had no further problems ThumpUp

Certainly worth getting in touch with rheumatology for advice and in the meantime perhaps some stronger pain relief might help. Hope things improve soon,

Yes the injections do wear off

Some people get up to 3 yrs out of them but I do t think I've managed that ever!
Rheummy nurse is the first port of call I'd think

In the meantime
If you are generally well
Have you thought about acupuncture?

It's a big help often.

Dawn

I get awful pain in my hips. I mentioned it to my rheumy last time. He pressed the area and asked if it hurt and it did. He said it was bursitis. Normally if it is actually your hip joint he said the pain radiates down your groin and into your leg. Mine is caused by bad walking following my knee replacement.

I have been told they can inject the area with steroids to help.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

thanks jackie, the pain is now a constant throb on inside joint of hip. When i walk it feels ok for a split second, then it feels like a knife then my hip nearly gives away as the pain shoots in it. I just had a hot bath, a 400mg of ibuprofen and i have a hot water bottle on it.I'm not even sure if i can take these tabs, i'm on methotrexate and folic acid only and these were the strongest pain relief i had in as they were for my husband when he had a hand injury. I haven't had any thing like this for years and it really has shocked me as to how soon these things can come on. Everyone was asking me at work what i had done and was i limping?? it was hard not to grimace as the pain was really quite bad at times. I've been in this job now for over a year and i've never had any problems like this whilst i have been there :(

Ow ow ow
Sounds awful

You may need an MRI
But
If you're going for the steroid jab in there, I can recommend one done under ultrasound
It's a big joint
Getting the jab in the right place
Rest it gently for 24 hrs then steady rotation
Might just be all it needs..

If it's hot then ice is supposed to be better for swelling
If you can do it

hi rose, thanks for the reply, yes, i have been extremely well and it lulled me into a false sense of security. I spoke to my rheummy this afternoon and he advised me re pain relief. He also said to look out for any swelling and or redness and to get medical attention straight away and to keep him informed of any changes. I felt reassured and glad that i rang in the first place. I didn't want to be a nuisance! :)
